MDF natural: what is it?

MDF is a popular sheet material that can be used for countless projects. MDF natural is the standard MDF variant and is often chosen because of its smooth surface and because it is easy to machine and assemble. The sheet material can be recognized by its light-brown colour. It is also the right choice when you want to finish your project by covering it with, for example, wallpaper; the slightly coarse surface makes it adhere well. Do you want to use MDF for visual applications? Then it still has to be finished with a lacquer or paint of your choice.

MDF natural is a structural sheet. This means that this sheet material still needs the necessary finishing before it can be used for visual applications.

Available thicknesses of MDF natural

You can order cut-to-size standard MDF of high quality and in various thicknesses from us. You can easily specify the desired thickness in the product configurator. This way you can be sure that the sheet material meets your requirements: both the size and thickness of the material. The following thicknesses are available: 3 mm, 6 mm, 9 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm, 16 mm, 18 mm, 22 mm, 25 mm, 30 mm, 38 mm and 50 mm.

Machining MDF natural sheets

The sheet consists of wood fibres compressed under high pressure. This makes the material easy to work with. When milling or sawing, this sheet material does not splinter. The fibres are held together by resin. This makes it important to degrease the plate well before painting the material. The material also has an absorbent effect, which is why we recommend always finishing the edges with an edge sealer. For this reason, MDF natural is only suitable for applications indoors and in dry conditions.

Are you going to paint MDF? Then it is nice to countersink the screws and seal them with putty or filler. Then sand and paint the whole neatly in one go.

Specific applications of MDF natural

MDF is the material of choice for furniture and interior applications. MDF natural, also known as standard MDF, is a versatile sheet that is suitable for various interior panelling applications. A door, a conversion for piping, a bookshelf, a TV cabinet and a partition wall are some examples of the possible applications of MDF. The homogeneous structure makes MDF less sensitive to shrinkage and expansion at varying temperatures compared to other sheet materials. However, MDF natural is not suitable for applications in humid rooms or outdoors.
